Peter Volaris opened his humble family home, situated in the heart of Prahran, to the public in 1963, in an attempt to share both his passion for music performance and composition and to enhance his teaching abilities. Further specialists were required almost immediately, occupying individual rooms of the home, to meet the growing demand for personalised and high-quality musical instrument and theory lessons.
1975 marked a year of change for Peter. The need for a larger space and the great desire to expose his students to a greater variety of resources was too overwhelming. Brunswick, a developing suburb at the time, was identified by Peter as an up-and-coming creativity hub and a true “melting pot” of differing cultures and interests. His store opened in 1975 and by the mid eighties the business had grown and he was drawn to the charming, double-fronted store located at 374 Sydney Road, where the store remains to this day, and started trading as ‘Volaris Music’ soon after.
The long hours involved in opening a new business saw Ken, Peter’s son, spend the vast majority of his childhood amongst musical instruments, live performances, music composition and reading. Such extensive exposure has heightened Ken’s true interest in the music network, specifically the inner workings of each instrument and piece of audio equipment. This deep understanding ensures he is able to provide considered advice and find the “right” instrument for everybody.
Whilst over the last forty years the music network and our stores influence has expanded, product knowledge, range and sourcing exponentially developed, many things simply have not changed. Our family-based approach to customer service, yearning to provide the best quality available, remain honest in trading and markedly competitive in price and providing specialty instruments maintain their position at the crux of our operation.
