Our Teachers

Tanya - Drums

Tanya has accrued a very busy 20 years of experience in drum tuition and session drumming (live and studio).

Her skills and talent have taken her around the globe as a drummer/performer in Circus Oz, as an opening act for Joan Jett, The Divinyls and toured with Aria award winning act Bachelor Girl!

Tanya also has extensive experience in theatre work - most recently Pennsylvania Avenue at The Victorian Arts Centre and theatre Restaurants including Dracula’s in Melbourne.

If technique, timing, dynamics and playing along with your favourite songs are on the menu for you... Tanya will always deliver!

Frank - Drums

Frank Lees is a Melbourne based drummer and musician and here at Volaris teaches drums to students of all age.

Currently playing with a number of bands including Press Club and Madre Monte, Frank loves to get out and tour as much as possible and as a freelance drummer. In recent years, Frank has toured internationally throughout Singapore, Phillipines, Canada and the USA.

Frank has studied the drumkit for over 15 years and has completed a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. Frank concentrates on sharing his passion for rhythm and drumming with every student that walks through his door.

Abbi – Violin

Abbi is a passionate violinist and teacher in her 3rd year of the Bachelor of Music degree at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Having performed a wide spectrum of styles, Abbi's repertoire ranges from symphonies to operas, with some of her personal favourites being Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. Alongside performing with groups such as the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra and Melbourne Opera Symphony Orchestra, she has also toured through Europe.

Abbi has also had years of experience in teaching. Her greatest goal as a teacher is to nurture and grow her students individually, so that they too can personally enjoy and love the music in their lives as she does!

Jen – Piano / Vocal / Saxophone / Flute / Clarinet

Jen is a multi-talented musician, teaching Flute, Piano, Voice, Saxophone and Clarinet. She is an active performer particularly in symphonic style music.

Her style and charisma have enabled her to participate in big band productions playing piano and flute and also involvement in choral ensembles.

She is currently completing her Masters in Music, specialising in Musicology. Jen also enjoys conducting, composition and working as a DJ as well.

Having completed her Bachelor of Music in Performance on flute, voice and piano, Jen’s students certainly do benefit from her vast array of music interests and knowledge.

Tom – Piano

Tom is a Piano teacher here at Volaris and started studying piano at the early age of 5 Tom is now in his final year of his Bachelor's in Music Performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University, under renowned Australian piano teacher Max Cooke.

Tom is passionate about passing on his love of piano to his students, as well as instilling a strong technical and musical foundation to everyone that walks through his classroom door.

Whether you are looking at starting out or looking for a new Piano teacher to guide you through AMEB, Tom is a warm and friendly teacher with great technical attributes to share.

Will – Piano

Will is a Piano teacher who focuses on developing a strong ability to sight read, before moving to a balanced emphasis on repertoire, technique, and sight-reading.

Currently studying the Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Melbourne, Will has been teaching piano at Volaris Music Centre since mid 2016.

His involvement in music is comprehensive, having played in classical orchestra’s, jazz bands, and rock groups, however he is most passionate about 19th century Romanticism and composers including Liszt, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff.

Bruce – Saxophone / Clarinet / Flute

Bruce is an experienced Saxophone, Clarinet and Flute player that teaches both Alto and Tenor Saxophone here at Volaris Music. Bruce has played with Renee Geyer, Russell Morris, Vince Jones and many other leading bands and artists, giving him a wealth of professional experience.

He has also played in jazz bands, blues bands and even rock bands making him very versatile both as a teacher and performer. Bruce has performed with the world’s best musicians and brings this to his classroom lessons with every student.

Bruce writes and arranges music and has taught music at schools at all levels and his ability to adapt his teaching method to all ages ensures amazing results and fun filled lessons!

Peter – Bouzouki / Accordion / Theory

Peter is a Bouzouki, Accordion and Theory teacher that has been working with musicians to further their knowledge since the 1960’s, Peter is a dedicated and experienced teacher that loves nothing more than to share his wealth of musical knowledge with everyone that walks through the doors at Volaris Music.

Peter has worked for decades in private tuition, classroom teaching, conducting orchestras and also film score writing for movies including the iconic “Death in Brunswick”.

Peter’s approach to teaching is methodical - implementing not only the practical side of playing but also the theoretical side as well.

James – Guitar  / Ukulele / Bass

James teaches Guitar, Ukulele and Bass at Volaris music and has performed Guitar and Bass Guitar in all styles since 2004. He has been teaching guitar privately since 2014.

James has an Associate Diploma in Performance on Classical Guitar (A.MusA) and is currently studying for a Bachelor's Degree in Composition at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

James won both First Place and the Emerging Composer Under 25 Award in the Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition for his new work ‘Between Tall Trees’.

Adam – Guitar / Ukulele / Banjo

Adam’s musical journey began almost twenty years ago at Volaris Music in the very same room in which he now teaches his own guitar students.

Now with over nine years of teaching guitar and even more performing, Adam is able to cater the lessons to suit any age and skill level.

Adam has a Bachelor of Music in Contemporary Guitar Performance from the University of Melbourne, and can be found performing around Melbourne as part of the city's booming traditional jazz scene.

Matthew – Guitar

Matthew is a classical and contemporary guitar teacher who regularly plays around Melbourne while studying a bachelor of music at the Victorian College of the Arts, specialising in Jazz and Improvisation.

Matthew loves to learn and share his knowledge with others, making him a very accessible and approachable teacher and is passionate about catering to his students needs.

Whether you are looking for a teacher for acoustic or electric guitar of any style, Matthew is dedicated to ensuring his students always love to learn.

Naomi – Piano

Naomi is a piano teacher with a passion for sharing the love of music that was shared with her when she first began playing at age 5.

Completing her AMEB courses at age 12 Naomi has concentrated on her studies and has been teaching piano since 2013.

She completed her Associate Diploma in Piano in 2014, learning under Janine Sowden.

Outside of music teaching, Naomi is pursuing a Bachelor of Agriculture at the University of Melbourne and is completing her Licentiate Diploma in Piano in 2018.

Emma – Trumpet

Emma is a trumpet player who has been learning and playing music since she was 4 years old. She has just recently completed her Bachelor of Music at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Emma believes that a solid technical foundation is the key to quality trumpet playing, and it is important to develop before attempting difficult repertoire. This is something the she is passionate about passing on to her students.

She has been performing with different ensembles at gigs across Melbourne since she arrived in 2015, including the Victoria Youth Symphony Orchestra, Victorian College of the Arts Big Band and the Australian Institute of Music Big Band.

Peter – Guitar / Ukulele

Peter grew up in a musical family surrounded by classical, folk and contemporary styles. He later followed in his father’s footsteps and honed in on classical guitar, later studying at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music under Julian Byzantine. Peter’s studies included Jazz and world music, music education as well as performance, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Music.

Since relocating to Melbourne Peter’s work has taken him in a different direction, but music was never far away, continuing to teach at music schools and privately in Melbourne’s South-East.

Peter’s approach builds on technique and theoretical knowledge, whilst helping students foster a love for music, exploring their own musical tastes and styles in the process. Peter teaches classical and contemporary guitar, as well as ukulele.
